De Tour Village MI Area Adventures
Candlelite Cove

Picture

Candlelite Cove is an ideal destination on its own, situated along a private road, surrounded by lovely trees and with ever changing western facing lake views.

Candlelite Cove Calendar & Reservations
However, when venturing out and about, there are so many delightful possibilities.  Everywhere you look there is another pretty view of Lake Huron or of another lake, river or creek, not to mention the beautiful tall trees, rare birds, unique flowers and wildlife.

Take your car across the ferry to explore Drummond Island just four miles away.  Quaint De Tour Village is also four miles away offering water and freighter views galore. Charter a boat or bring or rent kayaks to explore.  In the winter, Candlelite Cove is an ideal base for snowmobiling. Bring or even rent your own on Drummond Island. There are multiple beaches and pull offs along M134, some sandy, some rocky, and some are a mix.  The De Tour Village Botanical Garden is a lovely place to stroll by the water's edge, with various themed flower beds along the way.

Take the scenic M134 drive to Cedarville and then along to Hessel for more adventures.  In season, make a reservation and dine at the award winning Les Cheneaux Culinary School in Hessel, or at one of the other more casual area restaurants or bars.

St. Ignace is less than an hour away, and it is a fun and easy jaunt by passenger ferry over to historic Mackinaw Island.  Also, an hour away is Sault Sainte Marie.  Get the best view ever of the Soo Locks at the Soo Locks Visiting Center, or take a Soo Locks boat ride for another special experience.

Make memories at Candlelite Cove. Besides the spacious deck and hammock for two, are rockers, a spacious swing, and of course a rock encircled fireplace facing Lake Huron.
Sandhill Cranes fly right past the Candlelite Cove beach, and often bald eagles fly overhead or even spend some time on our beach.
The skies are ever changing at sunset at Candlelite Cove. With open water to the left, and two islands to the right, the views are amazing.
It is warm and cozy inside, with a new furnace plus a four season fireplace. Outside at the cove, it is bright white and blue. The lake is partially frozen in this winter photo.
Stormy skies are brewing in the distance, with another glowing fire in the foreground.
About two miles from Candlelite Cove we spotted this freighter steaming past.
See if you can spot De Tour Reef, one of only six reef light stations in Michigan.
Labor Day weekend guests snapped several pictures of both the dark skies and the multitude of stars, along with the northern lights.
We took this photo while crossing from De Tour Village to Drummond Island to enjoy dinner at Esther's Mexican Restaurant.
In 1959, with the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Gwen became the first pilot boat in DeTour Village. Shown here, she has since been restored and renamed the Philo B. Leonard,
Only about three miles away, is the De Tour Village waterfront Botanical Gardens.
It is impossible not to head right to the water's edge, to see what is going on. Swimmers, kayaks, fishing boats, sail boats and freighters are all among the possibilities.
In the distance, the Drummond Island ferry is taking its cargo of passengers and their vehicles across the lake.
This is one of the many whimsical gardens located within the De Tour Village Botanical Garden.
The water in the St. Mary's River and Lake Huron in the upper peninsula is incredibly clear, as shown in this picture.
Relax and sit a spell at the De Tour Village Botanical Garden.
This garden is ablaze with red blooms.
Volunteers tend each of these gardens which are found within the De Tour Village Botanical Garden.
There are so many fun and whimsical photos to be had in De Tour Village.
This spot is in honor of a De Tour Village fishing captain.
Here is another stunning spot to sit a spell to appreciate the quiet beauty of De Tour Village.
Sault Sainte Marie is an incredible place to view the passing freighters. Many at 1,000 feet or more, you are incredibly close at the Soo Locks Visitor Station.
Besides the helpers and information inside, the Visitor's Center offers lots more helpful facts.
This picture really shows how close you are to the locks on the second level of the Soo Locks Visitor Center.
Every year in August, Hessel offers an incredible wooden boat and craft show at the marina.
Also in Hessel, the lovely Les Cheneaux Culinary School with water and island views, is a very special place for a memorable dinner.
Here is another vintage beauty on display at the Hessel Antique Boat show. There were over 100 on display in 2023, besides live music, food, and a craft show.
This big guy hands out in Sault Sainte Marie across from the Soo Locks Visitor Center in a fun shopping district.
Les Cheneaux Islands consist of 36 different islands dotting the area. At the Hessel harbor is a little cement map pointing out several of the islands in front of a relaxing bench.
Whitefish Point Lighthouse is located in Paradise, Michigan along Lake Superior.
When arriving on a Star Line Ferry, this is the pretty view from the Mackinaw Island dock.
Whether walking, biking or traveling by horse or carriage on Mackinaw Island, take a step back in time.
Walk up and take a tour of historic Fort Mackinaw while on the island. The fort is also home to the oldest building in Michigan, the Officers’ Stone Quarters date back to 1780.
